That’s up from about 1 in 20 last year. Worse still, criminals armed with full dossiers on consumers — SSNs, home addresses, even knowledge-based authentication question answers — are hopscotching from one kind of account to another. Criminals are moving beyond traditional bank account hacking to opening up fake mobile phone accounts, internet payment accounts and online merchant accounts using stolen credentials.



The need for legal protection is just as real.  2013 study in the National Law Journal showed a continued rise in legal rates nationwide — with hourly charges of $1,000 or more increasingly common among top firms.



“There’s a growing number of unrepresented or underrepresented people in this country because lawyers, to some extent, have unfortunately priced themselves out of the market,” says Keith McLennan, a partner at the Pennsylvania law firm Miller Turetsky Rule & McLennan. “I always joke that if I needed the services of a lawyer, I couldn’t afford myself.”
